TELEPORTER ADVENTURES

BACKGROUND:

10% of Australian school leavers are financially illiterate. To combat this, in 2007 CommBank funded Start Smart, a free financial education program offered to more than 550,000 students each year. But these classes are unable to reach the isolated areas of Australia, where financial literacy rates are even lower.

Our brief was to make these award-winning financial education lessons accessible to all.

Introducing The Teleporter Adventures - a first of its kind virtual learning experience that combines VR with a classic storybook.

Inside the Teleporter Adventures pack, is the Teleporter (a branded Google Cardboard) an interactive storybook and instructions on how to download and work through the experience (available on both Google Play and iTunes).

The Teleporter Adventures is a self contained virtual lesson designed to be sent to every corner of Australia.

We collaborated Ursula Dubosarsky, with one of Australia’s most loved children’s authors to create the first book; the tale of Sammy the Space Koala, a Koala that goes on a galactic quest to find her Grandma a birthday present.

INSIDE SAMMY'S ADVENTURE:

In each of the chapters, kids are prompted to teleport into a different alien world and experience the adventure through Sammy’s eyes.

When kids saw the Teleporter icon in the storybook, they knew it was time to use their headset to jump into the scene

Research showed some kids can start to feel nauseous using VR for long periods of time. So we developed a short but immersive experiences in each chapters to break the VR down into sizeable chunks.

Kids progress through the story by making interactive decisions, such as choosing three things they’ll really need in space, rather than the things they want. The choices they make are then reiterated throughout the book.

The needs vs wants conundrum is taken directly from the start Smart curriculum and is a key lesson 6 and 7 year-olds are taught.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:

With the help of Sydney design studio FIN, we created and developed a distinctive cast of characters for both the 2D and 3D worlds.

RESEARCH:

We tested The Teleporter Adventures extensively with the help of teachers, VR experts, paediatricians and of course kids. The feedback and iterative development helped us achieve a product that was both safe and fun for the kids.

RESULTS:

  • 100,000 Teleporters delivered across Australia

  • Average time in app 11mins

  • In research 93% of children learnt the key money management lesson, the difference between a financial need and a want.

  • 5 star rating on Google Play

  • Research quote 'My son learnt more from 10 minutes in space than 6 years on Earth!'

With a national rollout plan, The Teleporter Adventures will deliver financial education to every primary school child in Australia.
